How can Family Therapy Benefit My Family?

Think of family therapy as a tune-up for your family's emotional engine. It can help you:

  • Communicate more effectively:
Are misunderstandings and arguments frequent in your home? Family therapy equips you with the tools to express yourselves clearly and listen actively to each other.

  • Build stronger relationships:
Do you feel like you're drifting apart from your loved ones? Family therapy can help you bridge the gap and develop more profound empathy and understanding for each other.

  • Resolve conflicts constructively:

  • Navigate life's challenges together:
Is your family facing a significant transition, such as a new baby, a move, or a job loss? Family therapy can provide the support and guidance you need to weather the storm and emerge stronger.

Family Therapy vs Individual Therapy

Individual therapy focuses on your concerns, emotions, and behaviours, whereas family therapy involves multiple people and focuses on improving the relationships and dynamics within the family unit.

Family therapy could also involve discussing how each person’s behaviour affects the family and how the family unit can be strengthened. Sometimes, people participate in family therapy plus individual therapy at the same or different times.

For example, in individual therapy, you would be able to dive into your presenting concerns deeper, and in family therapy, the focus could be on increasing all family members awareness and education on what you are dealing with and how they can best support you.

What happens during a Family Therapy session?

In a typical family therapy session, you'll meet with a therapist who will guide the conversation and ask questions to understand better family dynamics, history, and patterns of interaction within your family. The therapist will also ask each family member what their goals are. You can share your perspectives, express your feelings, and work collaboratively toward positive change. The therapist will listen, offer insights, utilize various evidence-based techniques and provide recommendations to help you address your goals.

Family Therapy FAQ

  • Is virtual family therapy effective?

Yes, many studies have shown that online family therapy is just as effective as in-person therapy. Some families even prefer virtual sessions due to their convenience. Especially if family members live in different cities and have different schedules, it can be very complicated and difficult to get all family members together in the same place. There are many added benefits to virtual family therapy, too.

  • Will everyone have the opportunity to speak?

In short, yes! The therapist will strongly encourage each family member to express their point of view and ensure that everyone's voice is heard. The therapist will be attuned to whether certain family members tend to overpower or dominate conversations and will try to create a safe and supportive space where all family members are equal.

  • What if a family member doesn’t want to attend therapy?

Ideally, all family members would be able to participate; however, it can still be effective if only certain family members are able to attend. If a family member is reluctant to engage, they could start with individual therapy to address their concerns. If you are unsure, you can always start with a free 15-minute consultation, and the therapist can help determine the next steps based on your family's unique situation.
