Our therapists also frequently incorporate Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) skills. Whereas CBT focuses on your thought patterns, DBT is more about giving you concrete strategies for regulating your emotions and mood. It can help you increase your tolerance to distress, how you handle uncertainty and respond to triggers as well as preventing extreme negative or impulsive reactions to stimuli. It’s an effective form of treatment for depression and episodes of severe depression.
Often, when we are experiencing depression, we don’t feel like doing anything. When we are feeling depressed, our automatic tendency is to withdraw and avoid. While this is common, it is very problematic and perpetuates the cycle of depression. The hardest step is often the first step-reaching out for support.
