Many kids have therapy sessions in their bedrooms, surrounded by their favourite items. They can even bring their favorite toy or pet to the session to provide extra encouragement. Online therapy allows children to show their therapist around their room visually, sharing their favorite toys, books, and artwork. This can be an excellent technique for clients to establish rapport and trust with their therapist.
With virtual CBT treatment and other therapeutic services available online, your child can receive the assistance they require in a safe, comfortable, and convenient setting. Online therapy eliminates the need for travel and waiting rooms, making it easier to arrange mental health care around your hectic schedule.
Generally speaking, we will start by doing an intake call with you (the parent) to go over logistics, availability, and pricing. If you feel it is a good fit, with the therapist then you are invited to book an initial assessment.
You are welcome to attend the initial assessment with your child, if it will help them to feel more comfortable. The goal is for your child to be able to do sessions independently. We aim to create a safe place for your child to freely be able to express themselves. Our child therapists will utilize creative therapeutic interventions and tools to engage your child. These might include interactive games, worksheets, puzzles, drawings and artwork.
You will be invited to attend the beginning and/or end of the session with the therapist. During this time, you can update the therapist on any of your observations, concerns or positive changes you have noticed. They will also provide insight into what was discussed during session, warning signs or symptoms to look out for, coping strategies that were taught to the child and ultimately how you can best support your child in between sessions. If you need more support, we can recommend another therapist for you.
The short answer is yes-sometimes more so than in person. We have had really good results and feedback from children, parents and therapists regarding the effectiveness of virtual therapy for children. Many children feel more comfortable with virtual sessions as they can do so in the comfort of their own house, in an area that is familiar to them. They can also have their comfort objects with them (favourite toy, blanket), show the therapist their favourite items/location in the house etc. This enables many children to open up easier and quicker, therefore enhancing the therapeutic relationship and outcome.
It is normal for your child to feel nervous, especially during the first few sessions but our therapists will do their best to create a safe and inviting (virtual) space. The therapist will also utilize creative interventions to engage your child which might include drawings, puzzles, worksheets or quizzes.
We prefer to use the term “practice”, but yes-practicing is required in between sessions. Our child therapists will be teaching your child a variety of healthy coping skills and encouraging them to practice in between sessions. You, as a parent, will also be encouraged to practice taking note of your childs triggers, warning signs, coping skills and provide feedback so that you can learn how to help your child cope more effectively.
