Trauma Therapy

Have you a traumatic event? We can help.

Is there a painful memory that you can’t stop replaying in your head? Have you experienced a traumatic incident(s) and can’t seem to move forward? Do you struggle with PTSD symptoms like flashbacks, nightmares, overthinking or intrusive thoughts? Deep down, are you mourning the person you used to be? We can help. Maybe you have a hard time maintaining relationships and you’re always self-sabotaging. Perhaps you suspect that it’s because of trauma, but you’re not certain. There may have been a negative experience in your childhood that still affects you to this day. But every time the question of trauma raises its head, you dismiss it and downplay the need for treatment, telling yourself that “other people have it worse.” Nonetheless, you might have trouble functioning at work or in school and wonder if your life will ever change or get better. We can help.

Some Jobs Involve Dealing With Trauma Every Day

Trauma can happen to anyone. But if you’re a first responder or frontline worker and your job requires you to be in hazardous situations, traumatic events can feel like an everyday occurrence. After all, people only call you when they’re having the worst day of their life. The intensity of your job could take a toll on your emotional health. Yet when you try to talk to your colleagues about it, they might tell you that “it’s just part of the job” or “this is what we signed up for.”

If you live in Ontario and want to talk to someone who will validate you and help you process and resolve your trauma, we encourage you to connect with one of our therapists. Here at CBT Wellness & Virtual Services, our goal is to help you find comfort and understanding and give you the tools to work through your trauma.

The Past Doesn’t Have
To Feel So Present In Your Life

You may not be able to change the past, but with the right help and support, you can change how you respond to it. You don’t have to face your pain alone. With the right support, guidance, and evidence-based treatments from our therapists, you can reclaim your life and find lasting relief from the effects of trauma. You deserve to heal and thrive.

If you want to stop letting traumatic memories interfere with your life and get your life back, we encourage you to connect with one of our therapists.  To get started fill out the Contact Form, click one of the buttons below to book an appointment or call/text 647-847-8875.

Most People Don’t Realize How Prevalent Trauma Really Is

Trauma is essentially a shock to your body’s alarm system. It’s what happens when an experience is too overwhelming or upsetting for your mind and body to process or “digest.” Instead of being filed away with the rest of your memories, it lingers on as if it’s still happening. Your body’s alarm continues to go off, keeping you in a state of fear.

People often think of trauma as what happens to soldiers in a war zone. But most forms of trauma are far more commonplace than that. Car accidents, brain injuries, sexual abuse and domestic violence are all serious examples of trauma that often require treatment to be healed.

Many Trauma Survivors Downplay Their Experience In Order To Feel Better

It’s very normal for people to minimise their trauma and compare their situation to those who seem to have it worse. This is a coping mechanism that helps traumatised people feel better about their own pain. Downplaying trauma is especially common among healthcare workers and first responders. Witnessing danger and death is part of the job, so many people have the attitude of “it’s just what I signed up for.”

Trauma may be very common, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a big deal. It can affect your relationships, your work, and every area of your life. Counselling is a chance to stop letting the past control the present and embrace a brighter future.

Therapy Can Help You Change Your Response To Trauma And Reclaim Your Life

Trauma is not something that you can “get over,” but it is something you can learn how to get through. You cannot wave a magic wand and erase your traumatic memories, but you can change the way you react to them. This is what trauma therapy gives you a chance to do. At CBT Wellness & Virtual Services, we are here to help you heal your emotional wounds, experience peace of mind, and reclaim your life.

What To Expect In Sessions

Trauma therapy often starts by looking at what happened (if and when you’re ready), why it impacted you, and how you responded to it. It’s so important to normalise your trauma and understand there’s nothing wrong with you. You are not at fault for your trauma or the way it affected you. Knowing this can go a long way toward building your self-compassion. We want you to be kind to yourself in the midst of the healing process and understand that it’s okay to feel sad, angry, and uncertain. All feelings are valid.

We also want to remind you of how strong and resilient you are. After all, you’ve survived 100% of your hardest days so far. That counts for something. Together, we can find ways to help you tap into your resilient spirit and stay calm and grounded during hard times. To do so, we can use lots of mindfulness practices like meditation and deep breathing. Mindfulness can increase your awareness of the present moment so that you stop getting so hung up on the past.

Tailoring Your Trauma Treatment Plan

Our practice draws from a wide variety of approaches in trauma and PTSD counselling.

As our practice name implies, we also use a lot of CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy). At its core, CBT is all about challenging the automatic thoughts that cause you to spiral down and believe you’re not good enough. The goal is to understand how your thoughts influence your feelings and behaviour and use that knowledge to change your thinking.

We also utilize CPT (Cognitive Processing Therapy), a specifically trauma-focused approach. CPT can help you change the way you think about your trauma and reframe your beliefs about it. For instance, if trauma caused you to believe that you’re at fault for what happened to you, CPT can help you evaluate whether this thought is accurate or not. You can learn to compare your thinking to reality and arrive at a more realistic view of yourself.

Some of our therapists are also trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) which is very effective in getting to the root of the emotional pain and desensitizes the impact of the trauma. With EMDR, your therapist will guide you through a series of gentle stimulation exercises (such as tapping or moving your eyes from side to side) while you talk through the trauma, which helps to reduce the emotional charge of it. This way, you can work through what happened without feeling as distressed or overwhelmed by it.

Right now, you probably find yourself wishing you could just forget your trauma altogether. You cannot wipe away your memories, but you can reduce their effect on your life and take back control. This is what therapy with us can help you accomplish.

You May Have Some Concerns About Trauma and PTSD Treatment…

What if I’m not ready to talk about my trauma?
That’s okay! You don’t have to open up about your trauma right away. At CBT Wellness, our goal is to always go at a pace that’s right for you. What’s more, therapy can still be effective even without talking directly about the trauma. Further, with EMDR, you can share as much or as little as you want—the stimulation exercises do the work for you, reducing the emotional impact of trauma without requiring you to “explain” what happened.
Will my workplace find out I’m in therapy?
No, they won’t. Everything is confidential here. We often work with first responders, veterans, and healthcare professionals, so we prioritise keeping your information safe and private. Your employer will not be notified, even if you receive your healthcare insurance benefits through your employer.
Will therapy make my trauma worse?
The first step of therapy often involves creating a “safe container” for your feelings and giving you strategies for dealing with your trauma. This is to ensure that you don’t feel re-traumatised during treatment. Working through trauma isn’t always easy, but it’s what allows you to heal. After all, if you had an injury, you wouldn’t delay getting help for fear of making it worse. Trauma is an emotional injury, so it requires treatment to get better.
